The Transitions of a Freshman

The moment my family said their goodbyes and I watched them drive away after orientation, as I was walking back to my dorm for the first time it was then it psychologically hit me that I was finally a college student. It was not the fact that I don't beleive I have the intellectual capacity to be a college student; it was the feeling of freedom and independence that a college student entails. I am free! I finally had the oppourtunity to go basically where I want when I please without the permission of someone else.

I have noticed with this new found freedom, there is not anyone making sure that I wake up on time for my morning classes or to make sure I actually complete my homework. It seems to me that the trade-off of independence is a major spike in the amount of responsibility. The once flashy and golden oppourtunity of self-reliance is also one of those pesky transitions from high school to college everyone cautioned you about.

In high school, I really did not feel the need to record everything in a planner and schedule as much. But, as I have learned in just a few weeks of college, it is quite the contrary. I now religiously write down all the assignments for each class in my planner and schedule out my time efficently. I feel that the test of time management college has given, I have completed fairly well so far. The new transitions of time management and responsibilty I have experienced go hand iin hand with a successful college student.

Honestly college has been an enjoyable time for myself so far. I have done all the things my mom advised me to do in college, basically. But truly the advice my mom gave me has been helpful in my transition from high school to college. So hopefully the wise instruction I have received from my family stays handy for the continual transitions I encounter at Berea.

  1. Wayne -- interesting ideas. But it seems like you are following so much. Is there one topic you are working closer with are you following freedom? responsibility? your own progress in planning? They all sound good, and I bet by the next entry I'll figure out better which you are following.
