The New National Past-time
Currently we have Baseball filling this position, but in my short time here at Berea I've learned of what should be, if not will be, our new past-time. It's name? Humans vs Zombies, or HvZ for short. It's an interesting little game that can run between twelve hours and two weeks. It can be overly simplified to be explained as a game of Tag using Nerf-style guns. The game begins with all humans, who carry the Nerf guns and are symbolized by white bandannas, and a single "alpha zombie," who masquerades as a human until discovered. The alpha zombie then infects people, who must then swap their white bandanna for a red one, signifying that they are a zombie. The objective of the zombies is to infect all the humans, while the human's goal is to stay alive. The human's have an advantage, however. Their Nerf guns can be used to stun the zombies, giving them time to escape. The humans have to worry about the growing horde, however in the games that last the two weeks, zombies must worry about starvation. If they do not infect a human every 48 hours, they die and are out of the game, so you can imagine they get aggressive. With all the movies, books, and video games featuring zombies, this was the obvious next step; a real time game. While the HvZ season hasn't opened yet, I'm intensely looking forward to the first game. I'm personally equipped with a 30 dart belt-fed blaster with a revolver-type for a back-up. I will keep you updated on the progress of the season from the opening session to closing week.

I am officially going to go and buy a Nerf gun the next time I'm at Walmart. You will have to let me know when the next game is. Can games really last two weeks?
ReplyDeleteI'll try not to answer as a teacher here! But, you have picked a great world to observe. I'm particularly interested in the intersection between playing this game and achieving one's other objectives in college!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Rebecca on this one. As I have instructed the red/white bands of previous years, keep a fair distance from me with all of your zombie-ness while you're playing. ; )
