The Social Hermit

Since coming to Berea, I felt like I was facing an overwhelming amount of change that I suppose comes with every "going to college" experience. But, as the days wore on I realized that while things seemed different, nothing truely changed, there was no spectacular transformation between high school and College. I still have classes, I still study, and I still spend time deciding between procrastinating a little bit longer or going ahead and finishing my work. Everything seems about the same. Except, of course, the fact that I have a job.

In my home town, jobs are few and far between, with teens and adults struggling to obtain a job. So, needless to say, with my lack of experience and age (with most places requiring you to be 18 to work there), I remained without a job until coming here to Berea. My job here is not what I thought it would be. I was told that I would be in "broomcraft" so I assumed that I would be in a workshop with tools everywhere and everything messy, unorganized, wonderful, and most importantly, away from people. Much to my surprise, I ended up working in a tidy little store instead, where I now spend my time working on different types of brooms and chatting up customers from all walks of life who always seem keen to know more about you and what you are doing.

This blog will serve as a record of the ups and downs of working, and the little pleasant breaks in-between. Whether it is with my constant struggles dealing with people or my own struggle to learn new things while my mind is constantly filled with the subjects of my classes, I know this year is going to be a change, for better or for worse.

  1. Great topic! I look forward to reading about the work, the forced socialization, and the breaks from all of that.

  2. Wow. That is something I can definitely relate to. I'm an introvert by nature who finds myself in situations that force me to demonstrate extrovert qualities. It's rough sometimes. But what I find helps is making sure I have that "down" time. I look forward to reading about how you experience yours.
